The Yamacraw Landing take-out is at mile 4.5, just past the bridge on river left. It can take quick paddlers less than 2 hours in a moderate current to reach the take-out here, while more leisurely types can stretch this float into a good half-day affair.

Beyond Yamacraw, the river increasingly widens, the current slows, and the banks become more heavily wooded with fewer gravel and sandbars.

At mile 7, the river begins the first of two consecutive bends to river right and then straightens out a bit as it heads past Alum Ford. As you go by, notice the rocky shelf on the western bank that looks similar to a layered cake that’s been sliced into portions. The river soon grows still wider, and the gravel bars and sandy banks disappear, as does the availability of flat, open riverside campsites. If you are doing a camping run and plan to continue down river toward Lake Cumberland, I’d advise you to stop at Alum Ford, which has six primitive sites and a concrete boat ramp. It’s at mile 10.4 on river right.
